Safety Protocol

The Garage follows a safety protocol based on EHS-0076 Shop and Makerspace Safety. In this system, each tool is assigned a class, and classes are defined as follows:

1. Low power hand and bench tools
2. Medium power hand and small benchtop tools
3. Medium power industrial and construction-scale tools
4. Powerful portable and industrial tools

The class of a tool determines how it can be used. While all tools require agreeing to the safety and liability waivers, the following are determined based on the class of a tool:

• Whether a tool can be used solo or if the two person rule applies
  • Class 1 has be used solo
  • Class 2 recommends the buddy system, and Class 3 requires it
  • Class 4 requires a trained supervisor at all times

Because of this, knowing the class of a tool is critical before using it.
